Day 256 - Samuel's tour of Tobermory Distillery

Image
Today we arrived at Tobermory on a boat. There were lots of colourful houses and I went on a tour of a distillery with my Uncle Ed and my Dad. They had lots of big machines - on most of them you could see inside and they were really amazing. First of all we went to a grinding machine, which is used for grinding the malted grain into grist. Then we went to the mash-room where there was a vat which had a giant copper dome. The vat was empty except for a spinning stirrer with spikes on it. The next room had four very tall wooden tubs, about as high as a double-decker bus, which are used for the fermentation process. The tour guide told us that the tubs are soon going to be replaced. Then we went into the still room, which had 4 extremely tall copper stills. This was probably the biggest room.   The stills are used to seperate the light alcohol from the heavy alcohol. The heavy alcohol can't get up the pipes and so goes back down into the sti

So far we haven't shared with you any photos of our trip round the Northern Coast of Scotland - definitely some of our favourite views so far.. Our drive from Ullapool to Durness was mostly characterised by sideways snow..  - we'd been furiously hunting for deer near Loch Ness, spotting the odd one or two.. and then we found lots, and lots... We arrived in Durness to rain, and spectacular views. Sango Sands  is our top campsite so far - direct access to the beach.   The next day the weather improved, so we went sand dune surfing, beach exploring and chocolate eating.. It is worth coming to Durness just to buy something from Cocoa Mountain .. Yes, that is their version of a kids hot chocolate.. complete with molten chocolate poured around the edge.. Alternatively, you can always order online..  Beach fun and beach treasures - including fossilised deer bones from Smoo Cave.  Did we mention how much we liked Sango Sands?!  Eventually we had to leave, an

We went skiing on cairn gorm mountain and we had lots of fun. This is a video of us coming down the mountain. A couple of days after we went to the Highland Wildlife Park and we saw lots of animals including Polar Bears and Amer Tigers. Here is a video showing Red Panda, Polar Bear, Snow Monkeys and an Amer Tiger trying to get his food!

First week in Aviemore - By Nathanael and Myriam

On Tuesday we went skiing with Samuel. I(N) crashed a lot, but then had fun going superfast, without braking by making a pizza (also known as the snowplough, for those of you who ski).. Daddy did some snowboarding, and he came to visit us while we were having our lesson with Katie. "Katie is a funny one - her just fall over every time. When her teaches me it's so ridiculous" This is Katie showing us we are supposed to have our skis sideways and not downwards, so they don't slide. This is Nathanael (with his teacher) skiing and Samuel is getting on his skis. The little blue skis are Myriam's ones. The end of a hard day's skiing lessons On Friday we went to an indoor play area, there were little rides where you needed to pay money, and the best one (a helicopter) was out of order. I(N) liked the slide the best. On Saturday we went to the Highland Wildlife Park . We saw two tigers, two polar bears, and a 'not llama'. Did you

Day 234 - vlog madness in the Highlands

We've just driven across the top of Scotland from Durness in the north-west to a little place called Huna, near John 'o Groats in the north-east. This will be our 105th night in the motorhome since we set off and I've just discovered, thanks to a low water pressure problem, that the water pump has been wired in wrongly since day 1. Having fixed that the water pressure is now good, rather than barely tolerable as it has been until now. I care a lot about that, although I realise you care much less and would rather have videos of Myriam being cute - so to reward you for reading about my water pressure issues, here you are... That was recorded a couple of weeks ago in Edinburgh, before the snow, and as you can probably make out is mainly about babies. In case you were wondering it is in English with one word of French near the end. Since we left Edinburgh we have been travelling through the highlands, with an initial stop on the shores of Loch Ness in Foyers. The main q
